5 Examples of Honey-Trap Spies
5 Examples of Honey-Trap Spies
A honey-trap is defined as a strategy whereby an attractive person coerces another person into revealing some kind of pertinent information, by means of deception. A person who employs this strategy is often referred to as a honey-trap spy. MI5, the United Kingdom's domestic counter intelligence agency, released a 14-page report distributed to hundreds of British banks, businesses, and financial institutions, titled "The Threat from Chinese Espionage." The famed British security service described a wide-ranging effort to blackmail western business people over sexual relationships. Conversely, Snowden, the infamous American whistle-blower, confirmed that the British spy agency used honey-traps and other dirty manipulations against nations, hackers, terror groups, suspected criminals, and arms dealers. The tactics the employed include releasing computer viruses, spying on journalists and diplomats, jamming phones and computers, and using sex to lure targets into honey traps.
Recently, in March of 2014, Benjamin Bishop, a 59 year-old and married U.S. Defense Contractor plead guilty to giving up state secrets to his mistress, a 27 year-old Chinese national in America on a visa. The affair lasted three years, and a number of important U.S. defense secrets were passed into Chinese hands. Its a very bond-esque world and the Chinese and British aren't the only governments who recruit honey-trap spies. Here is a list of 5 Examples of Honey-Trap Spies:
#5 Ekaterina Gerasimova
Ekaterina Gerasimova, also known a Katya, is a female escort and Russian spy who is famed for trapping Putin's biggest critics into embarrassing situations, aimed at destroying their reputations. Her most recent conquest, of many, was journalist and satirist Victor Shenderovich. Shenderovich was a 52 year-old married father, who admitted to cheating on his wife, while also blaming Putin for setting him up. He was quoted saying, "Putin's administration was listening to the allegations with enormous cool, and without denying any of it, they answered with their typical, illegal filth." This statement came hours after footage of Shenderovich, in a Moscow flat with Katya, was released on the internet. These videos were also broadcasted with two extreme nationalist politicians Alexander Potkin, and Eduard Limonov, in carefully edited x-rated clips, sending ripples of rumors that Soviet era KGB tactics were returning. Shenderovich's reply to all the nasty media was to admit, "I did have Katya- without much pleasure though, as she was as boring as your whole dull Gestapo."
#4 Anna Chapman
Anna Chapman, a Russian national, was arrested in June of 2010, on suspicion of working for the Illegals Program spy ring under the Russian Federation's external intelligence agency, the SVR. The ploy was to use their successful modeling and acting careers, in America, to befriend American politicians placed in high positions in the government, including one sitting cabinet official. Their goal was to gather the most sensitive data and classified information available to steal and pass along to their Russian Comrades. Chapman pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to act as a an agent of a foreign government without notifying the U.S. Attorney General, and was deported back to Russia in July of 2010, as part of a prisoner swap.
#4 Jeremy Wolfenden
Not every important government official is heterosexual, therefore not all honey traps are women. Jeremy Wolfenden was a homosexual and the London Daily Telegraph's correspondent in Moscow, during the 1960s. Unfortunately for Wolfenden, the KGB knew that he spoke Russian and they knew that he was gay. They ordered an attractive male Russian national, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Trade's barber, to seduce him and take compromising photos that would persuade Wolfenden to spy on the Western Community in Moscow. When Wolfenden revealed this plan to the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), in London, he was made into a double or reverse honey trap agent. He reported back to London on KGB activities in Moscow. He struck up friendships with important people like British defector, Guy Burgess, who was a member of the Cambden Five. The Cambden Five was a spy ring that contributed to communist cause.
#2 Katia Zatulivteter
Katia Zatulivteter, suspected Russian honey trap spy, was working as a Parliamentary assistant in 2011 when she was arrested on suspicion of espionage. Employed by Liberal Democrat, Mike Hancock, who sat on the defense committee, Katia worked as his assistant for three years before her arrest. Hancock hired Katia after meeting on one of his regular visits to Russia and proceeded unknowingly give her access to years of U.S. defense secrets. Some so critical, they pertained to top secret nuclear weapons intelligence, and other hugely sensitive defense topics. During that period, Hancock had asked for the locations of submarines, the inventory of the country's nuclear arsenal, and the date of the the next design review of the Trident Warhead. She was eventually cleared of the charges but not because she was innocent, instead because there was no proof.
#1 Christine Keeler
Christine Keeler was a popular British 1960's "it-girl" and lover of married British MP and Secretary of State for War, John Profumo. Keeler was working on plans with the U.S. to station cruise missiles in Germany. She was also the well known mistress of Yevgeny Ivanov, a soviet attache in London. Eventually, when evidence of Keeler's affair with Profumo hit the press, rumors of a honey trap spy plot spread. It is unknown whether she was encouraged by Ivanov to spy on Profumo, but many assume it to be so. Profumo was forced to resign for lying about his affair to the House of Commons, and Isamov was sent home to Moscow. Once home in Russia, Isamov ridiculed the whole situation, saying "It is ludicrous to think that Christine Keeler could have said to John Profumo in bed one night, 'Oh, by the way, darling, when are the cruise missiles going to arrive in Germany?'"
