Top 10 most endangered animals:There are numerous species on this planet. All the life on this planet together make up the ecological balance. Due to several natural as well as manmade changes in the environment many species of wildlife which are not able to adapt themselves to these changes are becoming less day by day and some are even extinct. These species which are in the verge of extinction are categorized as endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).This list features some of the most endangered animals which are in a great risk of extinction.
1.Ivory billed woodpecker :
The Ivory billed woodpecker(campephilius principalis) is a huge woodpecker believed to exist in south-eastern United States and Cuba.Habitat destruction and hunting for its feathers contributed to its near extinction. Also it is considered to be extinct until 2004 but later a very few number of these are found in Florida and Arkansas .But even then this animal is near to extinct as the existing population is very less and vulnerable.
2.Amur leopard:
The Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) is a leopard subspecies native to the Primorye region of south-eastern Russia and the Jillin Province of northeast China. This animal is considered as critically endangered by the IUCN in 1996. The main threats for this animal are poaching , loss of habitat, climatic changes and encroaching civilization. Recent studies showed an increase in their number from 19-26 in 2007 to 57 in 2015.

3.Javan rhinoceros:
The Javan rhinoceros (RhinocerosSondaicus)is the most endangered species of rhinoceros. Formerly found throughout southeast Asia and Indonesia are now around 40-60 found only in Indonesia. The main threat faced by this animal is hunting which is mainly for its horn. Other reasons for its critical condition are diseases and lack of genetic diversity.
4.Northern sportive lemur:
The Northern sportive lemur(Lepilemurseptentrionalis) is one of the most endangered species of lemurs which are believed to exist only around one small mountain in the northern tip of Madagascar. The number of these animals is as small as 20 or fewer as found in recent studies.
5.Western lowland gorilla:
The two species of lowland gorillas : Western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) and Cross river gorilla(Gorilla diehli)are listed endangered by the IUCN as there is an 80% decline of their population over the past 25 years. The main threats are loss of habitat, illegal hunting and illness. The ebola virus caused the death of many of these apes.
6.Saola- An Asian unicorn:
The Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis) which resembles an antelope is known as asian unicorn as it is seen rarely right from its discovery in 1992.There are estimated to be around several hundreds of these species in isolated tropical forests near Vietnam and Laos. Due to their small number and rare sighting these are considred critically endangered by the IUCN.the main threats to this animal are illegal hunting and loss of habitat due to deforestation.
7.Leatherback sea turtle:
The Leatherback sea turtle(Demochelys coriacea)is the biggest turtle on earth. It is considered endangered as its population has decreased from 115000 in 1982 to 20000-30000 in 1996, The main threats to this animal are loss of nesting habitat, theft of eggs by humans, illegal hunting and global climatic change.
8.Siberian tiger:
The Siberian tiger(Panthera tigris altaica) is the largest tiger found in the birch forests of Russia. The population of this animal has fell to around 40 in 1930's but again went up to 500 after protecting it. The main threats for this animal are illegal hunting and loss of habitat.
9.The little dodo bird:
The Little dodo bird(Didunculus strigirostris) is also known as manumea bird or tooth billed pigeon is native to samoan islands. This animal is in the verge of extinction like the big dodo bird with only a few hundred remaining. The main reasons for this are illegal hunting and habitat loss.
10. Northern right whale:
The Northern right whale(Eubalenaglacialis) is the most endangered species of whales which are around 350 in the Atlantic coasts of Canada and US. The main threats caused to these animals are hunting for whale oil, global climatic change and entanglement in fishing gear.This animal is considered as endangered because of its dwindling number.
