Top 10 Deadly Snakes in INDIA


Ten list of India’s deadly snakes. The list also include the known the “Big Four Snakes” which are responsible for causing the most snakebite cases and deaths India.


Number 10. Dwarf Sea Snake (Hydrophis Caerulescens)

This species appears along the coasts of India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, east to northern Australia and the Gulf of Thailand . It has been also found in southern China, Viet Nam, and western Indonesia. There are 14 to 18 maxillary teeth behind front fangs. The Dwarf sea snake grows up to 2 feet and 5 in length.


Number 9. Hook-nosed Sea Snake or Beaked sea Snake (Enhydrina Schistosa)

The Beaked Sea Snake is a medium sized snake with  a flattened body and tail.  The snakes are generally found in the coast and coastal islands of India. They are able to dive underwater up to 100 meters  and stay  for a maximum of five hours.


Number 8.Slender Coral Snake (Callophis Melanurus)

The Slender Coral Snake has an average length of   12 inches and  can grow up to 22 inches. A small slender snake found in most parts of the country except parts of central and northeast India, Bihar, Orissa, Madhya pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh up to an Elevation of 1500 meters.


Number 7. Himalayan Pit Viper (Gloydius Himalayanus)

The Himalayan Pit Viper is a medium sized snake and can grow up  24 inches long. In India, the Himalayan Pit Viper is found throughout the western Himalayas, in the states of Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, northern Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.


Number 6. King Cobra (Ophiophagus Hannah)

The king cobra  is the world's longest venomous snake and its commonly found predominantly in forests from India through Southeast Asia. The king cobra measures averages at 3 to 4 meters  (9.8 to 13 ft) in length and typically weighs about 6 kg and  can grow up to 18.8 feet long.

Number 5. Banded Krait  (Bungarus Fasciatus)

It is one of the largest kraits, with a maximum length up to 2.1 meters (6 feet and 11 inches).

The species is common in Assam and Tripura of India and Bangladesh, but becomes progressively uncommon westwards in India.


Number 4. Common Krait (Bungarus Caeruleus)

Kraits usually range between 1 and 1.5 m (3 ft 3 in and 4 ft 11 in) in length, although specimens as large as 2 meters.

Commonly found in northeast India, Bihar, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh up to an elevation of 1500 mts. Kraits feed on almost all Kind of snakes including other same species and other venomous snakes. Other animals include Lizards, Frogs and Rodents.

It is the smallest member of the Big Four snakes which are responsible for causing the most snakebite cases and deaths India .

The Russell's viper is one of the most dangerous snakes in   Asia, accounting for thousands of deaths each year.

An average size if Indian Cobra is about 1.9 meters (6 feet) in length and can grow up to  2.4 meters ( 8 feet).
